Haskovo Municipality is located in the central part of the southern Bulgarian region and is the 12th biggest city in the country with a population of 72 thousand people. In its pursuit of maintaining the status of a green and environmentally responsible municipality, Haskovo has adopted a program for ambient air quality (AAQ), as well as a program for Environmental Protection for the period 2021-2028. The programs also set out specific measures to achieve goals for cleaner environment and air, such as increasing the share of low-emission fuels, promoting the replacement of solid fuel heaters with alternative form of heating, energy efficiency measures, tightening the control and others.
Amid the upcoming stricter measures in Europe and the world, regarding the air quality and providing full compliance with the European Green Deal, and the plan of the EU to transition towards climate-neutral societies, Haskovo Municipality implemented an additional measure for control and prevention of the polluted air by installing 3 stations for air quality monitoring in real time.
The integrated solution is using high-end technology which monitors in real time the quality of the air and sends data to a cloud-based system every minute. The state-of-art equipment for data transmission, storage and analysis gives the opportunity to locate the air pollutant on the minute; to track the compliance with the European and local legislation for AAQ; to identify any dependencies through the history data readings.
Thanks to an online app, all citizens can monitor in real time various parameters of the air quality, which will be shared on the website of Haskovo Municipality, as well as inform themselves about the air quality index, which provides recommendations for outdoor activities, according to approved specifications and calculation methodology. The air quality data is also available in the air quality map.
